Team workshops FAQ


Winter Workshop (December)

Teams attend a series of classes based on the Challenge that they will be solving.

An adult must stay with the team at all times.

Teams should bring a sack lunch for the provided break.

No individual registrations, please register as a team (or partial team).

Rising Stars Teams (9:55am-2:30pm)

$12 per attendee (adults and children)

All participants will attend 4 classes: Acting, Instant Challenge, Costume Making & Set and Prop building, and Script Writing/Storytelling.

Competitive Teams (9am-2:30pm)

$15 per attendee (adults and children)

All participants will take Acting and Instant Challenge (tiered, based on the team's experience level).  The other 3 classes will be determined by what challenge the team is solving. Attendees will be grouped based on age and experience. If you already took a class last year (like Instant Challenge or Acting), this year's class tier will be more in depth and teach more advanced skills.

The competitive tracks offered include (this is subject to change based on instructor availability and expertise):

A: Technical (Show and Tech) – Make it Move- hydraulics, Intro to Technical Effects, Script Writing & Storytelling, 

B: Scientific (Top Secret)Intro to Cryptography, Script Writing & Storytelling, Creative Costumes and Props

C: Fine Arts (Vanished!) –  Intro to Technical Effects, Creative Costumes & Props, Script Writing & Storytelling

D: Improvisational (3 Peat)– Storytelling - crafting an Improv story, Improvisational games, Props in Improv 

E: Engineering In it Together) – Structural Engineering, Creative Costumes and Props, Script Writing & Storytelling

PO: Service Learning (Ready, Willing and Fable) – Fables 101, Script Writing & Storytelling, Creative Costumes and Props

F: First Year Teams - Properties of Materials (for use in Instant Challenge), Script Writing & Storytelling, Creative Costumes and Props (This option is a great choice for teams that haven't done DI before and haven't chosen their challenge yet)

Super Saturday (January)

This half-day workshop focuses on Instant Challenge and Acting/Improv. It builds on the Instant Challenge information introduced at the Winter Workshop.

Each team will attend four mini courses: three Instant Challenge (Performance, Task, and Hybrid) and one for Acting/Improv. Teams have the opportunity to perform Instant Challenges and observe other teams performing Instant Challenges.

An Adult must stay with the team at all times. In addition, each team MUST supply one responsible high school student or adult volunteer*.

In addition to Team Managers and Assistant Team Managers, up to 4 parents may accompany a team. A maximum of 7 adults total may accompany a team. All chaperoning adults are expected to monitor their own team's behavior during the event.  Chaperones need to quiet and respectful while volunteers are giving instructions and teams are working to solve their challenge. This means no chatting or talking on phones while a session is in progress. 

Rising Stars Teams (9am-noon)

$50 per team

Competitive Teams (1pm-5pm)

$60 per team

*Team-Provided Volunteer: experienced volunteers are usually paired with new volunteers

  • arrive one hour prior to the session start time to be trained
  • help facilitate the challenges
  • help with crowd control
  • review a (provided) handout with teams about the type of challenges they’ll be solving
  • read the instant challenges to the teams
  • go over a reflection handout with the teams after the challenges are completed
  • Super Saturday Challenge Masters (experts) are on site to train team-provided volunteers and assist as needed

Instant Challenge Scrimmage (February)

This event is for competitive teams only. Teams perform two Instant Challenges using procedures very similar to the tournament procedures described in Rules of the Road.

Teams arrive 15 minutes prior to their scheduled time. Teams do back-to-back Instant Challenges (15 minutes each) and then are free to leave the school. Total time at the school will be 45 minutes.

At a 4pm awards ceremony, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place awards will be given for each level. Teams are also given their score sheets, appraiser feedback, and a ranking relative to all of the other teams performing those Instant Challenges.  The Awards ceremony will last 30-45 minutes.
